On October 31st 2008, thousands of volunteers in over fifty cities donned ghoul, ghost and goblin attire to participate in the nation’s largest (and perhaps only) costumed get-out-the-vote canvass.

That night, volunteer trick-or-voters put a positive political twist on Halloween, knocking on over 100,000 doors, reminding people to vote instead of asking for candy.

Created by the Bus Project in Portland, Oregon in 2004, Trick or Vote is a massive non-partisan get-out-the-vote canvass, aimed at getting new people engaged in the political process. Studies show that face-to-face contact is the single most effective method to boost voter turnout—increasing participation by as much as 8–12%. And what better day to engage people face-to-face than on Halloween, just a few days before the general election?
